Don’t settle for the man made imitations…
Brick is one of man’s oldest building materials. Although the quality and appearance of brick has improved through the years, the basic raw material and manufacturing process remain the same.
So, with clay brick’s renowned longevity, why would you settle for the man made imitations when you can have ‘The real McCoy’? Genuine clay brick is made from natural materials. Clay brick is the most sustainable, green building material – clay is among the most abundant materials available on earth and brick is one of the few materials that building codes allow to be reused in residential and commercial buildings. Old Chicago bricks are salvaged bricks from old buildings in the Chicago area.
The 1835 fire in NYC (13 acres of the financial district were devastated and 674 buildings in the Wall Street area burned), created a tremendous need for fire-proof building materials… Clay is a non-combustible material (fired to around 2000 F) thus an excellent building choice to resist or confine fires. The New York metropolitan area was experiencing a building craze… So the clay brick making business boomed!
In 1923, the price of brick commanded $20 per 1000. Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, things began to change. Lighter building materials such as glass, aluminum, steel and veneers over poured concrete foundations were used instead of brick for building. By 1933 the price for 1000 bricks fell from $20 to $9.50.
But, like it or not, conventional burnt clay bricks are here to stay! This is precisely the reason why the brick industry is managing to keep itself alive, despite serious ailments, which threaten its very existence.

The many reasons why brick is so popular as a building material
Brick weathers beautifully with time. It is perhaps the only man made material that has defied time gracefully. It is also an extremely good thermal insulating material. Brick’s exceptional ‘thermal mass’ properties makes it naturally energy-efficient – The porosity of clay bricks helps to insulate the structure – during the summer brick masonry stays cool and during the winter, brick walls store heat and radiate it back.
The multiple qualities of brick have been known for centuries… ever since it was invented 5000 years ago. Many brick buildings older than a century are still in use today. The NIST (National Institute for Standards and Technology) gives brick masonry a 100 year lifespan. Clay brick is one of the few materials that building codes allow to be reused in a building application when it meets the ASTM standar, consequently, salvaged bricks are in high demand today.
Because of its inherently natural ingredients, the utilization of renewable energy in the firing process, and the reduction in the amount of resources used to manufacture brick (minimal waste and countless recycling options), brick is the first masonry material that can attain a ‘Certificate of Environmental Claims’ from a third party source. Brick is the most sustainable green building material made.
